Derby is a city of very mixed roofing stock, and the right approach changes street by street. The dense Victorian terraces around Normanton, Peartree and Rose Hill were built with clay plain tiles or Welsh slate on steep pitches, and a lot of them are now on their second or third covering. Move out to Littleover, Chaddesden and Alvaston and you are into 1930s semis with hipped clay roofs that are reaching the age where the nails give out before the tiles do. The post-war estates at Mackworth and Sinfin brought concrete interlocking tiles, which look sound from the ground long after the felt beneath them has perished.
