Alvaston grew along London Road as Derby spread south east, and the ribbon development from the 1920s and 1930s still sets the character of the place. Those houses were built with clay tiles on hipped roofs, often with a small gable over the bay, and the pattern of failure is consistent: the tiles themselves are frequently still sound, but the nails holding them have rusted through and the bitumen felt underneath has torn. That produces slipping tiles across a whole slope rather than one obvious fault, and it is usually the point at which a re-roof makes more sense than another repair. Behind the main road there is a good deal of post-war council-built housing on concrete tiles, where ridge and verge work is the more common call.
